The below mentioned features are to clarify similarities and differences of Odoo and Magento basing on both platforms’ peculiarities.

1. Opensource Solutions. Both systems belong to opensource free downloadable frameworks. It means their basic versions can be installed free of charge. Of course, the most complicated features belonging to Enterprise scale, are commercial hence, they require payment in both cases.

2. Functionality. Though Odoo claims their eCommerce module is powerful enough to meet all requirements for web store Magento possesses more extensive e-commerce functionality than Odoo due to its standalone e-commerce nature. Besides, the maturity and popularity of Magento predetermine the platform’s wider functionality including localization support for different languages, multicurrency, taxes supporting laws of different countries, the structural flexibility of its catalogue, and a vast variety of themes.

3. Integration. The coverage of Odoo and Magento functions differs at its core. While Odoo comprises the entire scope of enterprise resources planning, Magento belongs to e-commerce solutions only. This matters with regard to integration. Magento should be integrated into the corporate IT frameworks to be combined with other systems such as accounting, inventory, project management, etc. Odoo initially offers those modules built in.

4. Hosting. Once Magento is based on PHP, the selection of an appropriate hosting provider does not seem difficult. The Community edition of Magento could be deployed in one click for inexpensive host plans. Odoo uses less popular Python. Most probably, customers will have to rent VPS and involve an Odoo specialist for deployment. The alternative solution offers the Odoo-hosted version for $10-20/month per module.

5. Development and Customization Cost. The issue coincides with functionality and technologies somehow. Whereas Magento is more popular and older than Odoo, it is much easier to find experienced Magento developers. The same concerns PHP technology Magento uses. As a result, an average price for Magento development ranges within $25/hour in Ukraine, while a certified Odoo specialist costs $100-150/hour.

6. Supportability. Magento has been attracting a great number of worldwide users and followers over the years of the platform’s availability. It means Magento is supported with big amount of developers. Holding a leading position among the rest e-commerce platforms, Magento will keep getting actuality for a wide international audience further on. Definitely, the platform will not face a shortfall of support in the foreseeable future. The situation with Odoo support is not so straightforward. The number of the platform’s implementations is inferior to Magento. However, Odoo popularity is growing rapidly. The appearance of new modules sometimes outpaces the relevant supporting instructions and documentation. The similar question concerns a certain deficiency of Odoo developers. Nevertheless, such a supporting problem is to be considered rather deciduous as far as demand always breeds supply. So we presume both platforms’ support will be easily accessible for the next 5+ years.
